In a disturbing expose of the complex web of international arms trade and global politics, UN investigators and weapons tracers have uncovered a clandestine supply line to the embattled region of Darfur. Sudan, home to one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian crises, has been embroiled in war for years, and the discovery sheds new light on the clandestine involvement of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Researchers have followed a clear paper trail linking the UAE to a clandestine supply line of sophisticated military hardware to the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Darfur-based militia accused of atrocities against civilians and rival rebel groups. This covert supply network includes Chinese-built unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), guided bombs, and mercenary fighter troops from Colombia.
The source of the clandestine influx of arms and supplies into Darfur appears to originate from smuggled gold from the region, which has been channelled into the UAE’s financial systems. A considerable portion of the Darfur gold is reportedly being used to fund the UAE’s clandestine military supplies to the RSF.
While UN investigators and weapons tracers have carefully documented the covert supply channels, the UAE categorically denies claims of arms supplies to the RSF. However, this stance contradicts evidence collected over the past year by a UN-led monitoring team and experts specialising in tracing global arms trafficking.
“Based on our ongoing and painstaking investigation, the paper trail unequivocally confirms the involvement of the UAE in shipping clandestine military supplies to the RSF,” said a UN source who asked not to be identified.
The RSF militia, a key force backing the Sudanese military, has been accused of using the UAE-provided military hardware to quash opposition and suppress Darfur’s long-suffering population. The situation in Darfur remains dire, with over 300,000 internally displaced and thousands more suffering food shortages and violence.
UN experts caution that further documentation will be required to solidify the case and hold accountable those parties complicit in this clandestine arms network. Yet, the findings cast suspicion on a country whose global reputation as a key player in international diplomacy and global peacekeeping efforts seems at odds with its shadowy involvement in war and arms trafficking.
