Human Rights Activist Hillel Neuer Takes Aim at UN Special Rapporteur over Anti-Semitic Remarks and Financial Sanctions

Geneva, Switzerland – ZOA (Zionist Organization of America) President Morton Klein and UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer have come forward, criticizing recent remarks made by UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Palestine Francesca Albanese. Albanese has been at the center of a controversy following her claim that “America is controlled by the Jewish Lobby.” This anti-Semitic and baseless assertion has been met with widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, academics, and diplomats worldwide.

UN Watch, a Geneva-based human rights organization that monitors UN actions, has been a vocal critic of Albanese’s rhetoric. In an interview with The Jerusalem Post, Neuer, a leading figure in the human rights community, expressed deep concern over the Rapporteur’s divisive remarks, labeling them “anti-Semitic.” He further stated that such comments have “no place in the halls of the United Nations,” adding that they “hurt and divide people” and are “in clear contravention of the UN’s founding principles of equality, justice, and human dignity.”

Neuer’s remarks come at a time when Albanese’s activities have been under increasing scrutiny. In the aftermath of her remarks, US lawmakers, including the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chair, Michael McCaul, have called for Albanese’s termination as UN Special Rapporteur. The US State Department has also come under pressure to take actions against Albanese for her blatant anti-Semitism.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Neuer revealed to The Jerusalem Post that his organization had been actively lobbying the US government to take drastic action against Albanese. As an outcome of these efforts, the Trump administration had, in 2021, already initiated sanctions against Albanese, freezing her bank accounts. This measure effectively limited her access to funds. It seems that Neuer’s successful lobbying efforts have been instrumental in this outcome.

The development highlights growing tensions between those like Neuer who fiercely defend Israel’s sovereignty, and those, such as Albanese, who, in their criticism of Israel’s policies, cross the line into hate speech and conspiracy theories. As the UN grapples with anti-Semitism, Neuer’s remarks are a clear expression of outrage over the Special Rapporteur’s anti-Semitic assertions, reflecting the deep divide within the international community.

Neuer emphasized the crucial role of the United States in promoting international justice and protecting the rights of individuals worldwide. He stated that such efforts will “always be guided by our deep-seated understanding of human rights and our commitment to preserving global stability and security.” The situation is now set for a major showdown between the UN, critics of its activities such as Neuer, and the various stakeholders worldwide grappling with the challenges posed by the Middle East conflict.
