Official data submitted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to the Knesset today reveals a disturbing trend in the military’s handling of sexual assault cases. According to statistics obtained by the IDF for the year 2025, reports of sexual harassment and abuse skyrocketed to unprecedented levels.
The data, which is currently being scrutinized by lawmakers, indicates that a total of 2,420 complaints were lodged with the Yohlam unit, the IDF’s internal investigation department. This marks a staggering increase of around 350 cases compared to the preceding year, prompting widespread concern within the Israeli government and civil society organizations.
Upon reviewing the complaints, it is disheartening to note that only a meager 10% of the reported incidents were formally investigated and handled by law enforcement agencies, such as the Ministry of Defense or the police. Consequently, a mere 42 indictments were filed in connection with these investigations.
The overwhelming majority of the cases, a staggering 730 to be precise, were resolved exclusively through the command channel, involving conversations between soldiers and their commanding officers. This raises further questions about the thoroughness of the investigations, particularly in light of the numerous instances of alleged harassment and abuse.
Furthermore, an additional 21 cases were referred for disciplinary action, underscoring the lack of a more robust and transparent system for addressing complaints. The IDF’s response to these incidents has been described by some as inadequate, sparking demands for systemic reform and greater accountability.
In addition to the mounting pressure on the IDF to address these concerns, several civilian contractors working on military bases were placed on unpaid leave following a string of allegations, resulting in the withdrawal of approximately 60 contractors from active duty.
This development is merely the latest in a growing chorus of concerns regarding the prevalence of sexual harassment within the IDF. Given the gravity of these allegations, the IDF is now facing intense scrutiny from members of the Knesset and the public at large.
It remains to be seen how the IDF will address these issues and work towards creating a culture of zero tolerance for sexual harassment and abuse within its ranks.
