India and New Zealand Upgrade Relations to Strategic Partnership

Auckland, New Zealand: In a significant development, India and New Zealand have upgraded their relations to a Strategic Partnership during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the first visit by an Indian leader in 40 years. The upgrade was announced following talks between Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Auckland.

As part of the enhanced partnership, the two nations have agreed on a Roadmap to 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to NZ$7 billion. In a significant move to promote trade, a new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be implemented, removing or reducing tariffs on 95% of New Zealand exports to India. Notably, 57% of these exports will become tariff-free immediately, offering both countries significant trade benefits.

The upgraded partnership will also see cooperation in defense, maritime security, science, education, tourism, agriculture, and disaster management. The expansion of ties in these areas was facilitated by shared democratic values and common interests in the Indo-Pacific region. Both countries recognize the importance of maintaining regional stability and promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

Commenting on the developments, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the strength of the India-New Zealand partnership. “Our partnership is built on shared values, common interests, and strong people-to-people ties,” he said. “We look forward to working closely with the Government of New Zealand to take our relationship to new heights.”

Prime Minister Luxon welcomed the upgrade in relations, saying it is a “significant step forward” for both countries. “New Zealand and India share a commitment to democratic values, and we recognize our shared interests in the Indo-Pacific,” he stated. “We are excited about the opportunities that this partnership will bring for our businesses, our communities, and our region.”

The upgraded Strategic Partnership is expected to provide a platform for cooperation in a wide range of areas, including defense, trade, and science, and will promote greater economic engagement and connectivity between the two countries. With the new FTA set to enter into force soon, businesses and exporters in both countries can look forward to enhanced trade opportunities.

As India and New Zealand move forward with their Strategic Partnership, they are set to explore new avenues for cooperation in various fields, further solidifying their ties and strengthening their commitment to regional stability and prosperity.
