Iran Claims Retaliatory Strikes Against US Navy in Strait of Hormuz

In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iranian state media has released footage purporting to show the Iranian Navy’s missile and drone units targeting United States warships in response to alleged attacks on two Iranian oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Iranian media reports, the retaliatory strikes were conducted in response to what Tehran claimed was an American attack on the two Iranian oil tankers, the Shahr-e-Kord and the Saviz. The tankers were reportedly struck by missiles and rockets while navigating the strategic waterway.

However, US Central Command (CENTCOM) disputed Iran’s account, stating that American warships transiting the strait were indeed subjected to Iranian attacks, but maintained that the Iranian response was “unprovoked.” CENTCOM officials confirmed that US warships came under missile, drone, and small boat attacks on Thursday, but emphasized that the Iranian strikes were not provoked by any US actions.

The footage released by the Iranian media shows various types of Iranian military assets, including patrol boats, helicopters, and missiles, engaging US warships in the Strait of Hormuz. The images appear to depict Iranian warships firing anti-ship missiles and engaging US vessels with drones.

Iran’s military actions in the strategic waterway have raised concerns over the safety and security of maritime trade, which is critical for global energy supplies. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes, with oil tankers passing through the waterway on a daily basis.

US officials have consistently maintained that the US remains committed to protecting its warships and interests in the region. “We will continue to operate with our allies and partners to maintain freedom of navigation and to ensure the smooth flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz,” said a CENTCOM spokesperson.

Iran has long been a vocal critic of US maritime policies, which it views as provocative. However, this latest escalation has raised fresh concerns over the potential for further conflict in the region. Regional security experts warn that such incidents could escalate rapidly and have far-reaching consequences.

Tensions between Iran and the US have been running high for months, with the latest incident adding to the growing list of skirmishes and diplomatic incidents between the two countries.
