Iran Condemns Damascus Shrine Attack as Israeli, US ‘Terrorist Plot’

In a statement released yesterday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in the Sayyida Zainab area of Damascus, Syria. The attack took the life of Farhan Hassan al-Mansour, a respected Muslim cleric and Friday prayer preacher at the revered shrine.

Baghaei, in his statement, expressed deep revulsion at the brutal crime, describing it as part of a broader sinister plot orchestrated by the Israeli regime and the United States. He accused these two nations of seeking to sow discord and chaos in the region through the sponsorship of terrorism.

“We strongly condemn this terrorist act and express our deep condolences to the family of Shaykh Farhan Hassan al-Mansour, the Syrian people, and the Islamic scholars in Syria,” Baghaei stated.

He also called upon all regional parties to remain vigilant and fulfill their responsibilities in confronting and defeating terrorism and extremism. In his view, the collective cooperation of nations in the region is essential to root out terrorism and its perpetrators.

Baghaei emphasized that it was crucial to identify and hold accountable the individuals and countries backing terrorist attacks in the region. He underlined the need for regional cooperation to bring perpetrators to justice and to put an end to the menace of terrorism.

Iran’s stance is indicative of the deepening tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, which have been escalating in recent months. Iran views the Israeli regime as a significant threat to regional security and stability.

Syria’s Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Endowments also condemned the attack, describing it as a “cowardly terrorist act” aimed at targeting Syria’s sacred and cultural heritage. The US, however, has yet to comment on the incident.

In the wake of the attack, the Syrian government has pledged to enhance security measures at the Sayyida Zainab shrine to prevent any future extremist incidents. The shrine, a sacred site for Shia Muslim pilgrims, has previously been the target of terrorist attacks.
