In the wake of recent aerial strikes by the United States on critical sites in southern Iran, the Iranian government announced that it is considering cancelling its upcoming technical talks with US representatives in Switzerland.
The planned talks, scheduled to take place this summer, were intended to provide a platform for Iranian and American experts to discuss key issues related to nuclear cooperation and mutual technical concerns. However, Iran’s reaction to the latest airstrikes has heightened tensions between the two nations, threatening to derail these efforts.
The US strikes, which targeted several strategic sites in Iran, including a drone facility and a military command center, have been widely condemned by the Iranian government as a clear violation of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation on counter-terrorism and regional security.
According to a statement released by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the US actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for international law and the terms of the MoU. The ministry emphasized that Iran continues to adhere to its obligations under the agreement, while the US has failed to reciprocate.
“We cannot continue to proceed with talks that have no basis or credibility in the eyes of the Iranian people and government,” said a senior Iranian diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Until the US demonstrates a clear commitment to implementing the MoU and respecting Iran’s sovereignty, any talk of technical cooperation is premature.”
The diplomatic fallout between Iran and the US comes as a result of the airstrikes, which marked the latest episode in the ongoing tit-for-tat cycle of conflict between the two nations. The Iranian military has claimed responsibility for drone attacks on US interests in Iraq and the Middle East, which it says are part of a larger campaign to defend its national security interests.
Meanwhile, the US has accused Iran of being “one of the world’s leading state sponsors of terrorism” and warned that any further Iranian attacks on US interests would be met with swift and decisive force.
The fate of the technical talks hangs in the balance as the US struggles to contain the fallout from its recent airstrikes. Unless the US can demonstrate a willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue with Iran and address its security concerns, these talks may never come to fruition.
