Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, has delivered a scathing critique of the American military presence in the region, labeling it the sole source of instability in West Asia and accusing the United States of using its bases to launch aggression against neighboring countries.
In an interview with the Iranian television network Press TV, Baghaei emphasized that real and lasting security in the Persian Gulf can only be guaranteed through local cooperation among regional states without any foreign intervention. He warned that the American military presence in the region brings nothing but insecurity and has repeatedly exposed host countries to unnecessary risks instead of providing real protection.
The Iranian official also reiterated Tehran’s longstanding position that regional countries should stop relying on external powers for security and, instead, pursue constructive dialogue to establish joint regional security mechanisms. Baghaei emphasized that Iran is committed to building strong, respectful, and mutually beneficial relations with neighboring countries based on sovereignty and shared interests.
The comments come as tensions between Iran and the United States remain high following several rounds of military conflict between the two nations over the past year. Baghaei was clear that any defensive action taken by Iran would be specifically directed at American assets and bases used to launch aggression against the country, rather than targeting regional countries themselves.
Baghaei’s statement also touched on past episodes of American aggression against Iran, including the recent attacks in June and on February 28. He warned that the international community will hold the United States accountable for the consequences of its imposed war on Iran and the region, which he characterized as a global threat with far-reaching repercussions.
Iran has been prioritizing diplomatic engagement with the international community to resolve the conflict and has called on the United States to seize the opportunity for dialogue. However, the Iranian official was also clear that his nation is prepared to defend its territorial integrity and national interests against any foreign threat or aggression, should diplomacy fail.
The statement by Baghaei is the latest manifestation of Iran’s frustration with the United States’ regional policies, which have led to increased instability and conflict in the region. The comments are likely to escalate tensions between the two nations, which have been at loggerheads for years due to issues such as the Iran nuclear deal and Tehran’s ballistic missile program.
