Tensions in the Middle East have reached a new height following a series of missile attacks carried out by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the night of April 30. The attacks have sparked widespread condemnation from world powers, with the United States, European Union, and Gulf states denouncing the Iranian action as a clear example of the country’s aggression.
However, in a move that has further escalated the situation, the Iranian embassy in South Africa has taken a swipe at the United Arab Emirates (UAE), seen as an ally of Saudi Arabia, a key critic of Iran. The embassy issued a statement, referencing an ancient proverb to express its displeasure with its Arab adversary.
In a statement that was swiftly tweeted out from the mission’s social media accounts, the Iranian embassy in Pretoria, the South African capital, declared, “One who sits in a glass tower should not throw stones.” The comment is widely seen as a veiled allusion to the UAE’s reputation as having one of the tallest buildings in the world – the Burj Khalifa.
This move has left many in the diplomatic community scratching their heads, with some expressing concern that the provocative statement could further destabilize a region already gripped by escalating tensions.
A senior analyst with the International Crisis Group, observed, “The IRGC’s missile attacks are widely seen as an act of provocation, and the Iranian embassy’s subsequent shot across the bow directed at the UAE is little more than gaslighting. Such posturing does nothing but serve to heighten regional fears.”
In response to the Iranian missile attacks, the UAE government has expressed “utmost concern and regret over the actions taken by the IRGC” in a statement from its Foreign Ministry.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat, Minister of Foreign Affairs Faisal bin Farhan, has stated that the IRGC’s missile attack was “a brazen act of aggression that poses a significant threat to regional stability”.
Regional leaders and diplomats have now taken up the task of brokering an agreement in order to bring about an end to the ongoing conflict as the international community remains resolute in its demands that Iran cease all aggression towards its neighbors.
