Iran Executes Convicted Mossad Spy Trained in Nepal for Spying on Country’s Military and Cyber Institutions

In a move viewed as a significant blow to Israeli intelligence gathering efforts, Iran has executed a convicted Mossad spy who was trained in Nepal and managed to funnel sensitive information from Iranian military and cyber institutions to Israel. The individual, identified as Ehsan Afrashteh, was reportedly caught by Iranian authorities while still in possession of highly classified information.

According to reports, Afrashteh first established contact with Mossad agents in Turkey, where he was initially vetted and assessed for potential as a spy. Following an evaluation of his family connections, which included relatives with ties to sensitive state institutions, Mossad instructed him to return to Iran and attempt to gain employment in a sensitive organization. This strategy, known as a “walk-in” or “insider threat,” aims to recruit unwitting individuals with access to classified information.

Although Afrashteh ultimately failed to infiltrate the specific organization targeted by Mossad, the spy group chose to continue working with him, paying him 1,000 euros prior to his return to Iran in an effort to build trust with the would-be double agent.

Once back in Iran, Afrashteh continued to operate under the guise of a ride-sharing driver, using his vehicle as a means of accessing secure locations and gathering information about the Ministry of Intelligence and other sensitive military sites. Given his proficiency in Hebrew, Afrashteh was well-positioned to execute Mossad’s directives while avoiding detection.

During his time as a Mossad operative, Afrashteh documented the locations of targeted institutions, captured images of the Ministry of Intelligence, and even generated detailed personality profiles of high-ranking individuals, all of which were shared with his Mossad handler. It remains unclear at this time how long Afrashteh worked on behalf of Mossad, but sources indicate that Iranian authorities were ultimately able to apprehend the spy when they discovered the sensitive information in his possession.

This operation marks the latest in a string of high-profile espionage cases involving Israeli intelligence gathering efforts in Iran, with Iranian leaders viewing it as a stark indication of the country’s continued efforts to spy on and undermine the authority of the Iranian government.

Iran’s judiciary has made public statements regarding Afrashteh’s execution, with officials emphasizing the severity of his crimes and the threat that espionage poses to national security.
