While the IAEA has long called for enhanced access to Iran’s atomic sites to better assess the nation’s compliance with nuclear non-proliferation agreements, Tehran has consistently resisted these requests. In response to the IAEA’s demands, Iran has insisted that inspections at designated atomic facilities be carried out according to the terms of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iran views the current requests as tantamount to a retraction of the deal’s terms and conditions, thereby rendering it null and void. This interpretation has become increasingly pronounced since the United States pulled out of the JCPOA in 2018.
According to experts, the dispute reflects broader power struggles and diverging perspectives between nations on issues related to international security, nuclear proliferation, and national sovereignty. Diplomatic efforts, aimed at de-escalating this situation, seem to have reached a standstill.
