Iran Reiterates Review of US Proposal on Framework

TEHRAN, Iran – The Iranian Foreign Ministry has reaffirmed its stance on the framework proposed by the United States, stating that it is still under review by the Iranian government. This development comes as negotiations between Iran, the US, and Pakistan continue in the backdrop of regional tensions and escalating geopolitical rivalries.

In an interview with the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Baghaei outlined Iran’s position on the American proposal. According to Baghaei, the framework is currently being scrutinized by Iranian officials, following which Tehran will convey its finalized stance to Pakistani authorities.

This diplomatic development assumes significance against the backdrop of recent tensions between Iran and the United States. The current standoff began in January 2023, when a drone attack attributed to Iranian forces targeted a US-led coalition in Syria. Since then, relations between Washington and Tehran have deteriorated, with the US imposing economic sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the Iranian government.

In an effort to diffuse the situation, Islamabad has offered to mediate a dialogue between Iran and the US. Pakistan has historically maintained close ties with both nations, and its diplomats have played a key role in brokering several agreements and accords between them over the years.

Experts have welcomed the renewed engagement between the three nations, seeing it as a positive step towards de-escalating tensions in the region. However, they also caution that progress will be difficult to achieve in the absence of a genuine commitment from Tehran and Washington.

For its part, Iran has insisted that any agreement must be based on mutual respect and equality, with the US agreeing to lift sanctions it has imposed on Iran’s oil and banking sectors. Washington, on the other hand, has sought concessions on issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and alleged terrorist activities linked to Iranian proxies in the Middle East.

In a statement released after the ISNA interview, Pakistani Foreign Office officials reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to mediating a dialogue between Iran and the US. Pakistani diplomats have sought to position their country as a key player in regional politics, capitalizing on its geographical location and historical ties with its neighbors to facilitate diplomatic communication and cooperation.

As regional rivalries intensify, diplomats on all sides remain hopeful that negotiations can yield concessions and de-escalate escalating tensions between nations. With Iran’s review of the US proposal ongoing, observers will be closely monitoring developments in the coming weeks to assess the prospects for a lasting agreement.
