Tensions between Tehran and Kuwait escalated on Wednesday as Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, accused Kuwait of unlawfully attacking an Iranian boat and detaining four Iranian nationals in the Persian Gulf. The incident is reported to have taken place near a strategic island that serves as a hub for the United States to attack Iran.
In a statement on social media, Araghchi condemned the act as a clear attempt to sow discord, emphasizing that Kuwait’s actions were in direct contravention of international law. He emphasized that the island in question is of great significance due to the repeated U.S. military attacks on Iranian soil and personnel from the island.
“We strongly condemn this aggressive and provocative act by Kuwait, which can be seen as an attempt to disrupt regional order and stability,” Araghchi stated. “The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed to the security and sovereignty of regional nations by the U.S. military presence and aggression in the Persian Gulf.”
Araghchi went on to emphasize that Tehran demands the immediate release of the four Iranian nationals who were detained as a result of the incident. “We urge Kuwait to respect human rights and the sovereignty of our nation, releasing our citizens immediately,” Araghchi said.
Iran’s top diplomat also reserved the right for his country to respond to the situation, emphasizing that the country would not tolerate such aggressive acts. “Kuwait should not entertain illusions that our country will remain passive in the face of aggression,” Araghchi warned.
Kuwait has yet to respond to the allegations made by Iran. However, sources familiar with the situation confirmed that Kuwaiti security forces did indeed detain four Iranian nationals after a vessel was involved in unspecified “disturbances” near the island. The nationality of the detained individuals is reportedly yet to be confirmed.
Tensions in the Persian Gulf have been escalating in recent months, with ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. The region has witnessed heightened military activity, including the U.S. drone strike in January that killed top Iranian military commander General Qasem Soleimani.
In his statement, Araghchi emphasized that the actions of Kuwait are a direct result of U.S. policies in the region and are an attempt to undermine Iran’s sovereignty and stability. As diplomatic efforts to defuse the tensions between the United States and Iran continue, the situation between Tehran and Kuwait has sparked fears of further escalation in the region.
