Tehran, Iran – In a sharp rebuke directed towards the United States, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani’s deputy Saeed Khatibzadeh, commonly known as Baghaei stepped in recently to respond to mounting tensions between the two nations. Speaking to regional journalists on Sunday, the Iranian diplomat expressed discontent over the US’s refusal to negotiate on certain issues, labeling these US demands as “unreasonable.”
Referring to ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States in Vienna, Austria, Baghaei said that Iran’s proposal to the US contained “reasonable and legitimate” provisions. However, he emphasized that these measures did not amount to an “excessive” request from Iran’s side. The diplomatic official’s assertion aimed to alleviate concerns of Iran’s negotiating team, which has been seeking to reach a mutually acceptable agreement on the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Tensions between Iran and the United States remain high, stemming from long-standing issues like nuclear proliferation, human rights, and security concerns in the Middle East. The diplomatic impasse also extends to US Congressional sanctions on Iran. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in recent public forums, stated that a comprehensive agreement between the two nations is unlikely due to these issues.
Iran’s diplomatic officials seem increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in negotiations, amid what they say are unreasonable US demands. The situation has become increasingly volatile, with each side pointing fingers at the other for the diplomatic stalemate. While US officials assert that their positions remain firm and non-negotiable, Iranian diplomats stress their nation’s willingness to engage constructively in negotiations.
In response to Iran’s recent statement, a US State Department spokesperson pointed to the long-standing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and expressed disappointment regarding Iran’s actions that have not been in line with US expectations.
Baghaei’s assertion underscores Iran’s firm stance on its negotiating positions and indicates a hardening of the line ahead of any potential renewal of negotiations. As the diplomatic impasse continues, regional powers closely monitor the unfolding drama, with many watching to see how US officials will react to Iran’s recent assertions.
The ongoing US-Iran tensions are a stark reminder of the complex and intricate nature of their relations, which have historically been marked by episodes of cooperation and periods of intense friction. As Washington and Tehran continue to exchange diplomatic jabs, regional dynamics are also under scrutiny.
