Iran Threatens to Abandon Commitments Amid US Allegations of Treaty Violations

Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated further, following a statement made by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. Mr. Baghaei emphasized that Iran will not fulfill its obligations under the existing agreement, as long as the US continues to disregard its own commitments.

The statement comes in response to recent claims made by the Biden administration that Iran has been in breach of the landmark Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. Washington has alleged that Tehran has been secretly stockpiling enriched uranium and failing to provide adequate access to nuclear inspectors.

In light of these allegations, Mr. Baghaei emphasized that Iran will retaliate with equal measures, effectively mirroring the US approach. “As long as the United States continues to violate its commitments, Iran will likewise refrain from fulfilling the obligations it has undertaken,” he said in the recent statement.

Tehran maintains that Washington has consistently failed to meet its own obligations under the JCPOA. These include the removal of sanctions and provision of a promised credit line to facilitate Iranian oil sales. Instead, the US has increased its pressure on Iran through additional sanctions and diplomatic isolation.

Iran’s stance on the matter has been reinforced by statements made by President Ebrahim Raisi, who has repeatedly called on the international community to hold the US accountable for its perceived breaches of the agreement. Mr. Raisi has emphasized the importance of a mutual approach and the necessity of reciprocal measures to maintain the integrity of international agreements.

Diplomatic efforts to salvage the JCPOA have been ongoing for several months, with European powers and other international actors actively engaged in mediating talks between Iran and the US. However, progress on the matter has been hampered by differences in approach and mistrust between the two sides.

The latest statement made by Mr. Baghaei underscores the deepening divisions between Iran and its international partners, particularly the United States. As tensions escalate, the international community remains hopeful that diplomatic channels will prevail, and a mutually beneficial solution can be found.

In a statement released by the US Department of State, a senior official described the Iranian stance as “in line with the regime’s typical tactics,” indicating that Washington will continue to hold Tehran accountable for its actions.
