Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization has showcased its recently renovated and upgraded launched vehicles, sparking interest and concern within the international community. The display, held in an undisclosed location in the country, was attended by senior Iranian officials and military personnel.
At the forefront of the showcased vehicles is the Simorgh, a heavy-lift launch vehicle that was previously revealed in 2016. The renewed version, touted by Iranian authorities as being capable of carrying payloads of up to 220 kilograms (485 lbs) into space, features an upgraded propulsion system and aerodynamic design.
Another key highlight of the unveiling was the Zoljanah space launch vehicle. Iranian officials described this vehicle as being capable of launching various payloads into space or the upper atmosphere, with the potential to serve as a precursor to more advanced launch capabilities.
The showcased vehicles have been seen by many as an attempt by Iran to assert its growing capabilities in the face of intensifying regional power struggles. Tensions between Iran, the United States, and their respective allies have increased in recent years, with multiple incidents of military confrontation and proxy conflicts reported in key areas of the Middle East.
The Iranian government has maintained that its ambitions in rocketry and space exploration are purely peaceful, with officials often pointing to its space agency’s plans to send humans into orbit as evidence. However, outside observers view the country’s ongoing pursuit of launch technology with skepticism.
The showcased rockets were reportedly displayed alongside various other components of Iran’s military-industrial complex, including a range of ballistic missile systems and other advanced defense technologies.
This move by the Iranian government comes at a time when Washington has imposed new penalties on Tehran, targeting its steel exports and other industrial sectors due to claims that these sectors use forced labor from the Revolutionary Guard Corps.
