The conflict between Iran and the United States continues to intensify with no resolution in sight, despite the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending hostilities. Eight days after the MoU was reached, key clauses remain unfulfilled, and tensions are escalating by the hour. The ongoing war and occupation in Lebanon and Palestine, in particular, have cast a shadow over the fragile agreement.
According to reports, the war and occupation in Lebanon and Palestine continue unabated, with multiple breaches of clauses 1 and 13 of the MoU. Clause 1 emphasizes respect for each other’s sovereignty, while clause 13 calls for the withdrawal of forces from foreign territories. The ongoing hostilities raise significant concerns about the MoU’s effectiveness in achieving its objectives.
In a positive development, the Strait of Hormuz is open, and Iranian ships are passing through the blockade unimpeded. However, Iran’s frozen funds, totaling billions of dollars, remain inaccessible to Tehran, thereby breaching clause 11 of the MoU. This clause stipulates the release of blocked funds as part of the agreement.
The suspension of oil sanctions was announced, but it has not yet been implemented, leaving Iran’s economy in a state of uncertainty. Meanwhile, threats against Iranian officials and the country’s territorial integrity continue, thereby violating clauses 1 and 3 of the MoU. The United States and its regional partners have issued anti-Iranian statements, casting doubt on the sincerity of the agreement.
A further breach of the MoU emerged when the communication line between the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was annulled. The line was established in Switzerland in an apparent contravention of the MoU’s content.
In a stark escalation of hostilities, the US military launched attacks on targets inside Iranian soil, thereby violating the entire MoU. This brazen act has raised serious concerns about the future of the fragile agreement and has sparked widespread condemnation from Iran and its allies.
As tensions between Iran and the US continue to soar, the international community is closely watching the situation, urging both sides to fulfill their obligations under the MoU. The failure to achieve a lasting peace threatens regional stability and raises fears of further conflict.
