Iran Warns of Confrontation Over US Interference in Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, IRAN – In a strongly worded statement, Ebrahim Azizi, Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, has cautioned the United States against any interference in the newly established maritime regime of the Strait of Hormuz. The declaration comes as a direct response to concerns over the safety of international shipping in the strategic waterway, a key passage for the global oil trade.

Azizi emphasized that any US attempt to meddle in the enforcement of the new regime, agreed upon by Iran and its fellow signatory nations, would be considered a blatant violation of the ceasefire. The Chairman reiterated that Iran will not engage in any negotiations or discussions with the United States regarding the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the Gulf’s waters and the surrounding region will be governed according to principles of international law and the agreements made during the 2023 Iran- Oman talks.

This development follows heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over the past few months, primarily centered on the ongoing negotiations regarding the new maritime regime. The US has long been involved in a contentious dispute with Iran over maritime claims within the Strait of Hormuz, with both nations maintaining competing assertions to control key sections of the passage.

Tehran has stated that its agreement to establish a new maritime regime in the Strait of Hormuz was part of a comprehensive deal involving multiple nations in the region. As such, any perceived interference from the US, including through diplomatic or economic means, would be seen as a clear attempt to undermine the sovereignty of regional countries. Furthermore, any US intervention would have serious repercussions for international trade and oil supply chains.

Ebrahim Azizi expressed the position of the Iranian parliament clearly in the statement: “The statements made by the Trump administration on the matter of the Strait of Hormuz are nothing but delusional pronouncements devoid of any legal or factual merit. They are, in effect, a reflection of the United States’ long-standing propensity to disregard the established norms of international relations and disregard the will of other nations.”

Azizi concluded by emphasizing Iran’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its national interests and defending its territorial rights. With tensions running high between the two nations, experts are closely monitoring developments for potential flashpoints and escalating conflicts that could disrupt global oil supplies. The situation is being viewed as highly volatile, as international markets anxiously await a resolution to these contentious claims.
