In a move that is likely to send shockwaves throughout the global maritime community, a senior Iranian military official announced on Thursday that any potential passage of a ship through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz will require Tehran’s explicit approval.
According to the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Yadollah Javani made the statement during a live television interview in which he emphasized that Iran’s military is fully prepared to take any necessary measures to defend the nation’s sovereignty over its territorial waters.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a critical waterway that handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s total oil exports. It is also a highly contested region due to ongoing tensions between Tehran and several other major regional actors.
The move follows a series of aggressive remarks made by Iranian officials in recent months regarding their stance on freedom of navigation in the vital strait. While this new development may appear to be yet another example of Iranian intransigence, experts say that this latest statement can be seen as part of a broader diplomatic effort by Tehran to reassert its control over the strait in the face of ongoing regional rivalries and power politics.
Iran’s stance on this issue is a direct response to an array of aggressive military moves made by its regional adversaries, including an American carrier group deployment to the region in early January. US President Joe Biden has repeatedly emphasized the US commitment to ensuring the security and stability of international sea lanes, including those in the Strait of Hormuz.
Javani’s assertion is also likely aimed at countering growing criticism that Iran has in effect closed off the critical waterway since a series of incidents involving Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps vessels and US warships in November 2022. Iran has repeatedly denied any such accusation, citing its rights under international maritime law to secure and inspect foreign naval vessels moving through its waters.
