Tensions within Iran have escalated following the emergence of a militant slogan from a prayer hall in the country’s capital city, Tehran. According to social media reports, the slogan ‘We are all avengers of the father’s blood, obedient to the son’s command’ was chanted by a crowd gathered at the Mosala, one of the city’s most prominent prayer halls.
This provocative phrase has sparked both domestic and international concerns regarding the escalating tensions and growing calls for violent retaliation. Those behind the slogan’s dissemination, believed to be hardline supporters affiliated with Iran’s theocratic regime, are urging protesters to seek vengeance for the death of Hossein Shahbazi, reportedly a protester who was killed during clashes with government forces.
Iranian authorities have yet to issue a direct response, but the regime has been actively suppressing protests, employing a wide range of tactics from arbitrary arrests to enforced disappearances to disperse and intimidate anti-government demonstrators.
Pro-government forces have consistently portrayed those participating in the protests as ‘terrorists,’ an effort that has drawn criticism from human rights groups concerned about the increasing militarization of Iran’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, Iranian opposition groups have continued to speak out against the government’s harsh measures, accusing the regime of escalating violence against peaceful protesters. Amid concerns for Iran’s safety and stability, the United Nations General Assembly issued a statement on Thursday calling for restraint.
Protests in Iran began in September 2022, following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested by morality police for allegedly breaching the country’s dress code laws. They have since spread across the country, becoming one of the most significant anti-government movements in recent history.
Iran’s theocratic leadership has consistently refused to address protesters’ demands, insisting that their actions are against the country’s constitution and national sovereignty. However, protesters persist in their calls for broader democratic reforms and a greater voice in governance.
As Iran continues to face severe economic hardship, international sanctions, and internal dissent, the emergence of this aggressive slogan serves as a stark reminder of the deep-seated divisions and the risks of further escalation, potentially threatening global peace and stability in the region.
