Iranian Delegation Prepares to Meet in Doha to Discuss Fund Repatriation and MoU Implementation

A high-level meeting is set to take place in the Qatari capital, Doha, where Iranian representatives will engage in discussions with Qatari officials to address key issues surrounding the repatriation of frozen Iranian funds and the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri Kani will be leading the discussions, alongside representatives from the Qatari side, aiming to make significant progress on several crucial fronts. These include the unfreezing of Iranian funds, a vital aspect of the country’s economy, which has faced severe constraints in recent years following strict international sanctions.

Contrary to some expectations, Iran has emphasized that it will not engage in any direct talks with the US side during this meeting. Rather, the focus is on maintaining diplomatic channels with the Qatari government as part of efforts to follow up on the implementation of terms outlined in the recently signed MoU. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson clarified this stance, affirming that Ghorab Abadi, Iran’s Special Envoy and Coordinator for Interaction with the International Community, will be in Doha to monitor the Qatari side’s compliance with the MoU provisions.

The memorandum of understanding appears to make progress on certain points. Article 13 explicitly indicates that direct negotiations on a permanent agreement would only commence upon successful implementation of the MoU’s requirements. This stipulation includes an unconditional end to military actions against Lebanon, which has long been a contentious issue. Iranian officials have expressed satisfaction with ongoing efforts towards implementation, particularly as regards lifting the blockade and excluding Iranian oil exports from US sanctions.

Although certain specifics remain unclear, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s commitment to this process remains firm, and it is expected that both sides will demonstrate a commitment to cooperation. With these key issues high on the agenda, tomorrow’s meeting promises to be an important milestone for regional diplomacy and the resolution of key disputes.
