In a surprise attack on Tuesday evening, Iran launched a drone strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in eastern Jordan, sparking concerns over regional stability and exacerbating existing tensions between Iran and the United States.
The attack, for which both Iran and Jordan have acknowledged, saw a swarm of Iranian Shahed-136 drones target the air base, which is used by the United States military as a logistics hub and training facility. The facility has been involved in supporting operations against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
According to eyewitnesses and US officials, multiple explosions were heard at the air base, but there were no reports of any casualties. While the extent of the damage is still unclear, images obtained by Reuters showed smoke rising from the base and damage to several aircraft on the ground.
“The attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base is a clear example of Iran’s disregard for regional security and its continued provocative behavior,” a senior US official stated, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Jordan, which has maintained a delicate balance between its relationships with the US and Iran, condemned the attack, describing it as an “unjustified aggression.” The kingdom, whose military has been involved in joint operations with the US in Syria and Iraq, has sought to maintain its sovereignty in the face of increasing regional competition.
The drone strike is widely seen as a message from Iran to its adversaries in the region, particularly the United States. Following the January 3 assassination of top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed to exact revenge on US interests.
US military officials, however, downplayed the attack’s significance, emphasizing that the air base has robust defenses and that the strike did not result in any casualties.
“This attack was intended to demonstrate the Iranian military’s capabilities and test our military preparedness. We take it as a warning, but we remain vigilant and committed to protecting our troops and interests in the region,” said a US military source.
Iranian officials have yet to directly claim responsibility for the attack, but the use of Shahed-136 drones, designed to carry small explosive payloads, is consistent with Tehran’s reported military capabilities.
As the situation in the region continues to unfold, the incident is likely to intensify diplomatic efforts between world powers, particularly Iran and the US, to de-escalate tensions and prevent further military confrontations in the Middle East.
