Iranian Foreign Minister Calls for Compliance with Memorandum to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Tehran, Iran – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a statement emphasizing the importance of complying with the memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that has been impacted by recent conflicts.

According to the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will return to its pre-war operating capacity within 30 days under Iran’s management, with any obstacles being removed by the Islamic Republic. Araghchi asserted that responsibility for the implementation of these arrangements lies solely with Iran, emphasizing that no other institution or country shares this responsibility.

However, the Iranian Foreign Minister warned that any interference or attempts to establish new or separate arrangements would only exacerbate the situation, delay the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and increase tensions. This sentiment comes as recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz have already led to rising tensions and confrontations.

In a direct appeal, Araghchi urged all parties involved to refrain from interfering in the management of the Strait of Hormuz or in the arrangements being made by Iran for its reopening. He emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to the signed memorandum of understanding and prevent any deviations from its intended course.

The recent tensions in the region have raised concerns about the safety and security of global shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for oil shipments, with over 20% of global crude oil production passing through it each day. Any disruptions to the passage of shipping vessels could have significant economic and environmental consequences.

As diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis continue, the onus rests on all parties involved to work together in good faith to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as quickly as possible. The implications of compliance or non-compliance with the memorandum of understanding will be closely watched, as the international community seeks to avoid further escalation in the region.
