TEHRAN, IRAN – In a recent address to Iranian officials, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a biting critique of Western countries, warning that they must adhere to their own moral standards before criticizing Iran’s human rights record and international relationships.
Khamenei’s comments, delivered during a gathering of senior government officials and high-ranking clerics, centered on the theme of hypocrisy in international relations. The Iranian leader pointed out that Western countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have been vocal in their criticism of Iran’s human rights record, its nuclear program, and its close relationships with Russia and China.
However, Khamenei argued that these countries have yet to establish a consistent and equitable approach to international relations. He cited examples of Western countries’ historical colonialism, continued meddling in the affairs of other nations, and support for authoritarian regimes as evidence of their own moral failing.
“We have heard it said that Iran should respect the rights and freedoms of its citizens, but we ask: what about the rights and freedoms of the people of Iraq, Yemen, and Syria?” Khamenei asked during his address. “These are the very countries that Western powers have destroyed, bombed, and exploited for their own interests.”
In a sharp rebuke to Western leaders, Khamenei warned that Iran will not be lectured on morality by countries that have a history of hypocrisy and double standards. “If you want to be consistent in your words and actions, then we are willing to listen to your criticisms,” he said. “But if you want to continue playing the hypocrite, then do not expect Iran to take your words seriously.”
Khamenei’s comments reflect a growing sentiment in Iran that the country will no longer be lectured by Western powers on issues of human rights, democracy, and international law. Instead, Iran is emphasizing its commitment to its own values and principles, even if they differ from those of Western countries.
The Iranian leader’s address has been met with widespread approval within Iran, where many citizens see the West’s criticisms as disingenuous and self-serving. For his part, Khamenei has made it clear that Iran will continue to pursue its own foreign policy goals, including its close relationships with Russia and China, without apology or compromise.
Only when Western countries demonstrate a commitment to their own moral standards, Khamenei suggested, can they expect to be taken seriously in their critiques of Iran.
