Iranian Opposition Camp Hit in Rocket Attack in Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Erbil, Iraq – In a strike that has raised concerns over the escalating tensions in the region, a rocket attack targeted an Iranian opposition camp located north of Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, leaving at least two members wounded, according to a report by Reuters on Wednesday.

The attack, which occurred early in the morning, took place at Camp Liberty, the headquarters of the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI), also known as the Mujahideen-e-Khalq (MEK). The group, a long-time opponent of the Iranian government, has been based in Iraq since the 1980s.

The rocket attack prompted an immediate response from Iraq’s defense ministry, with officials urging residents to remain calm and assuring that security measures have been heightened in the area to ensure the safety of civilians.

In a statement, Lieutenant General Othman al-Ghanimi, Iraq’s joint operations commander, confirmed that the attack had been carried out by a rocket barrage and described it as a premeditated act of aggression. Al-Ghanimi’s remarks were made in the presence of other senior security officials.

The attack has drawn condemnation from various quarters, including the PMOI, which described the strike as a terrorist act. A group of Kurdish officials have also condemned the rocket attack, stating that it posed a threat to regional stability.

Iran has been at odds with the PMOI for years, and this recent attack has raised concerns over a resumption of military hostilities in the region.

The PMOI has been critical of Iran’s government and has carried out anti-Iran regime campaigns. Tehran views the MEK as a terrorist organization and has been vocal in its opposition to the group’s presence in Iraq.

In a similar vein, tensions between Iran and the United States have been running high in recent months, further heightening concerns over a possible conflict.

Following a series of US drone strikes targeting Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Syria, a US drone was shot down by Iran’s armed forces in January this year. The escalating tensions have heightened concerns over a possible conflict between the two nations.

As the situation continues to unfold, regional leaders are under growing pressure to prevent further escalation. The United States, Iran, and other regional powers are engaged in intense diplomatic efforts to address the growing tensions.

The recent rocket attack in Camp Liberty is a stark reminder of the precarious situation unfolding in the region. While the immediate impact of the attack has been contained, the underlying factors driving these tensions remain unaddressed, threatening a broader destabilization of the region.
