Iranian Pilots Held Captive by Qatar Since February Crash, Officials Claim

In a recent development regarding a contentious February aerial engagement, Iranian officials have alleged that two pilots from the downed Su-24 fighter jets have been captured and imprisoned in Qatar for six months without access to their families or any Iranian representation.

In this unfolding diplomatic saga, Tehran’s accusations against the Qatari government are centered on the fates of the two Iranian pilots, who were initially reported missing following an airstrike over Qatari waters in the Persian Gulf. The incident occurred during an Iranian military operation against targets in the region.

The news came through General Baqerzadeh, reportedly a high-ranking Iranian military official, who called for an international intervention in this crisis and urged the International Red Cross (ICRC) to facilitate a visit to the Iranian captive pilots. According to official sources, the pilots, who were crew members of the ill-fated Su-24 jets, have been subjected to harsh prison conditions, deprived of communication with their families and countrymen.

Iran’s claims have been made public amid a backdrop of strained relationships between Tehran and Doha. The tensions started after Iran conducted air strikes against targets in the region that included Qatari waters. While the Qatari military claimed that they successfully captured the surviving pilots from the crashed Iranian fighter jets, the Iranian government remains adamant about their pilots’ current status and detention.

The Iranian pilots’ possible mistreatment or lack of access to their families are matters of grave concern for the authorities in Tehran and have been cited by the official General Baqerzadeh as a call for urgent international intervention. Iran views Qatari forces’ actions as a clear violation of the prisoners of war (POW) status under the Geneva Conventions and an infringement on their rights as captured combatants.

Qatari officials, however, have kept silent on these allegations. The current impasse appears to be an intense manifestation of growing tensions and rivalry in the region, marked by the ongoing military activities by multiple regional countries.

The Iranian authorities have appealed to the international community, urging the ICRC to inspect the condition of the detained pilots and ensure their access to their families.
