Iran’s Call for Regional Peace Gains Support from Palestinian Islamist Group Hamas

A senior Hamas official has expressed cautious optimism over recent statements made by Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, who called for an end to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East region, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to a statement from Dr. Bassem Naeem, Head of the Arab-Islamic Relations Office at Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group views Rezaei’s statements as a positive step towards bringing an end to the region’s persistent wars. Hamas sees the continued conflict between Palestine and Israel as a strategic play to weaken the region and its various nations.

The Hamas official pointed out that Rezaei’s statement highlighted the benefits that arise from halting ongoing conflicts. “Stopping these wars is a great benefit for the region, its people, and its future,” Naeem said. He added, however, that any attempts to resolve these conflicts must consider the strategic plans of the “Zionist enemy”, which he believes are intended to fragment and destabilize the region. These plans, Naeem suggested, are aimed at exploiting the region’s abundant resources and natural wealth.

Given Iran’s longstanding support for Hamas and other regional Islamist groups, Rezaei’s statement is seen by observers as a key component of a broader Iranian strategy aimed at calming regional tensions and potentially shifting Iran away from its confrontational approach towards Israel.

For several decades, Iran has been at the forefront of regional efforts to bolster Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation, supporting various factions including Hamas. Over recent years, however, analysts have noted increased tensions between Iran and Palestinian groups following the signing of the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab states.

Hamas’s support for Rezaei’s call to end regional wars comes as part of broader efforts by the Islamist group to navigate a rapidly shifting regional landscape. Despite facing significant challenges from within, including internal divisions and declining international support, Hamas continues to push for a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a statement, Hamas emphasized that it is committed to the preservation of national Palestinian rights and the continued struggle against what it sees as Israeli occupation and settler expansion. While views differ regarding Iran’s intentions behind its recent statements, Hamas’s backing for its efforts suggests that the Islamist group remains open to exploring avenues for peace in the region, albeit under conditions favorable to its own survival and long-term interests.
