In the vast expanse of the Persian Gulf, Iran’s island archipelago, comprised of over 3,700 small and medium-sized islands, stands as a geological curiosity. Among these islands, Qeshm, situated off the port city of Bandar Abbas, is notable for its dramatic landscape, characterized by towering mountains that serve as a stark contrast to its counterparts. This unique geographical feature raises several questions about the geological formation of Iran’s island terrain and the processes that shaped these formations.

Besides Qeshm, nearly all of Iran’s islands are characterized by a flat to gently sloping terrain. For instance, the island of Larak, situated just north of Qeshm, has a topography devoid of any significant elevations. Similarly, the islands of Hormuz, Kharg, and others in the Persian Gulf share this flat terrain, often featuring shallow water depths, making them an attractive destination for tourism and trade.
