Baghdad, Iraq – In a rare display of solidarity between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq, the Iraqi government has agreed to permit the transportation of the body of Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, who passed away unexpectedly in Qom, to Najaf International Airport for eventual burial in the holy city of Najaf.
According to eyewitnesses, the body of the revered leader was loaded onto a specially chartered flight in the early hours of the morning, marking the beginning of the intricate process of transporting the late Ayatollah’s remains to his final resting place.
The decision, reportedly made after intense diplomatic talks between Baghdad and Tehran, is seen as a gesture of good will between the two nations and highlights the close spiritual ties that bind Shia Muslims across the region. The burial is set to take place in Najaf, a city considered hallowed ground for Shia Muslims, in a ceremony that is expected to draw thousands of mourners from across the Middle East.
Ayatollah Khamenei was a prominent figure in the Islamic Revolution in 1979, playing a key role in shaping the country’s spiritual identity. As a leading scholar in Shia Islam, he was widely respected for his interpretation of Islamic law and his guidance on matters of faith. Khamenei served as the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic from 1989 until his passing.
Sources close to the Iraqi government have confirmed that all necessary arrangements have been made to facilitate the entry and departure of the chartered flight, ensuring a smooth transfer of Ayatollah Khamenei’s body to Najaf for a dignified burial.
In a statement, Iraq’s prime minister expressed condolences to the Iranian government and people, emphasizing his nation’s commitment to strengthening ties with Iran. “The government of Iraq shares in the sorrow of the Iranian people and reaffirms its commitment to solidify the strong bond of friendship between our nations,” he added.
Meanwhile, Iranian diplomats have been working closely with their Iraqi counterparts to finalize the necessary arrangements, including the issuance of visas and clearance procedures for the mourners expected to travel to Najaf for the burial.
With the body of Ayatollah Khamenei set to arrive at Najaf International Airport later today, thousands are expected to join the funeral procession to pay their respects to the revered leader who played such a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual identity of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
