IRAQI GOVERNMENT VOWS TO ENFORCE DEADLINE FOR ARMS SURRENDER

BAGHDAD, IRAQ – In a recent statement, Iraqi government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi sought to dispel any notion that the country’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign is linked to the impending visit of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani to Washington. This assertion comes amid growing concerns from the international community regarding Iraq’s efforts to root out graft and promote transparency within the government.

Al-Aboudi emphasized that the prime minister’s visit to the US capital, scheduled to take place in the coming weeks, will not be influenced by the country’s anti-corruption initiatives. Instead, he highlighted the pressing need for Iraqi authorities to demonstrate tangible progress in their fight against corruption, particularly given the country’s historical struggles with endemic graft and cronyism.

In a separate development, al-Aboudi confirmed that the government’s deadline for restricting heavy and medium weapons to state control remains firmly in place. The official deadline for armed groups to surrender their weapons to the relevant authorities is now set at September 30, with those who fail to comply risking severe consequences under the law.

The Iraqi government has consistently made its intentions clear regarding the deadline, which is part of a broader effort to establish a more secure and stable environment within the country. In this regard, al-Aboudi stated that armed groups have been formally notified of the deadline and are expected to comply fully with the government’s directives.

Those who refuse to do so, al-Aboudi warned, will be held accountable and face the full force of the law. This serves as a clear indication of the government’s resolve to enforce its policies and ensure that the country’s security is adequately maintained.

The deadline represents a critical juncture in Iraq’s efforts to rebuild and consolidate its security apparatus. The government’s ability to manage this process effectively will be closely watched by the international community, particularly in light of ongoing concerns regarding the country’s relations with neighboring Iran and the impact of the US’s withdrawal from Iraq in 2020.

By enforcing the arms restrictions and taking decisive action against those who refuse to comply, the Iraqi government is demonstrating its commitment to upholding the rule of law and uprooting the remnants of its troubled past. This will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of Iraq’s future and inform the course of international efforts to promote stability and security within the country.
