The President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Bafel Jalal Talabani, has strongly condemned yesterday’s wave of drone and ballistic missile strikes launched from Iran targeting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. In a press statement, Talabani described the aggressive act as a severe breach of international norms, emphasizing that the region will not be drawn into a cycle of escalation.
“These deliberate strikes not only target the people of Kurdistan, but also threaten regional stability and global security,” Talabani stated, urging Iran to refrain from such actions in the future. He underscored the region’s commitment to maintaining peaceful relations with its neighbors, stating that an armed response would be taken only as a last resort.
Talabani expressed gratitude to the international community for its continued support and solidarity in the face of the recent aggression. “The Kurdistan Region remains committed to its long-standing position of seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts,” he stated.
In a thinly veiled warning to Iran, Talabani emphasized that the region is more than capable of defending itself, despite its commitment to restraint. “Our restraint should not be mistaken for a lack of resolve or ability,” he said. “When the time comes, we will not hesitate to protect our people and our sovereignty.”
According to local reports, multiple residential areas in the Kurdistan Region experienced missile strikes, resulting in several civilian casualties. The attacks have been widely condemned by regional leaders and diplomats, who have called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Talabani pledged that the Kurdistan Region will coordinate with its international allies to ensure a decisive and robust defensive response, while stressing that the region remains committed to a peaceful resolution to the conflict. As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, calling for restraint and diplomacy.
“This situation highlights the need for sustained dialogue and cooperation between regional actors to prevent further escalation,” a spokesperson for the United Nations Special Representative for Iraq stated. The international community remains vigilant, urging all parties to exercise restraint and work towards de-escalation.
As the situation continues to unfold, Talabani reaffirms the Kurdistan Region’s resolve to maintain regional stability and its commitment to peaceful coexistence with its neighbors.
