IRAQI KURDISTAN ROCKED BY IRANIAN ATTACK ON KURDISH OPPOSITION GROUPS AND US BASE

Erbil, Iraq – In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Iranian forces launched a large-scale attack against Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in Iraqi Kurdistan’s Erbil and the US base at Erbil International Airport last night. The strike, which is believed to have been carried out by Iranian drone and artillery forces, has left multiple casualties and widespread destruction in its wake.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack began at approximately 23:45 local time, with reports of explosions and gunfire emanating from the northern outskirts of Erbil. The assault appears to have targeted the headquarters of several prominent Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, including the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) and the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party (KSDP).

US officials confirmed that the Erbil International Airport, which is home to a US military base, was also struck during the attack. The base, which hosts a contingent of American troops and contractors, was reportedly subject to a barrage of artillery fire and drone attacks. There are reports of casualties among US personnel, although the exact number is unknown at this time.

“The Iranian regime’s aggressive actions pose a direct threat to regional stability and the lives of countless innocent people,” a US official stated. “We will continue to work closely with our Iraqi and Kurdish allies to ensure that those responsible for these acts of violence are held accountable.”

Iraqi Kurdish authorities have condemned the attack, with Erbil Governor, Omed Khoshnaw, saying that “the people of Kurdistan will not be intimidated by such brazen acts of aggression.” The Iraqi government has vowed to cooperate fully with international partners to prevent further attacks and restore stability to the region.

The attack is believed to be linked to Iran’s increasingly strained relations with the Kurdish opposition groups, which have long been critical of Iranian human rights abuses and suppression of minority rights. The Iranian government has accused the opposition groups of being involved in “terrorist activities” and has called for their dissolution.

As tensions between Iran and its Kurdish opponents continue to escalate, regional experts warn of a potential powder keg. “This is a highly volatile situation, with multiple parties involved and a long history of conflict,” said Dr. Amir Abedi, a Middle East analyst at the University of Edinburgh. “The risk of further violence and escalation is very real, and regional leaders must take decisive action to prevent a wider conflict.”

In response to the attack, the US has vowed to strengthen its military presence in Erbil and to work closely with Iraqi and Kurdish forces to prevent further aggression. The situation remains fluid and highly uncertain, with further developments expected in the coming hours and days.
