Kiev, Ukraine – In a significant turn of events, Ukraine has declined a donation of 27 RG-32M Light Tactical Vehicles (LTV) from Ireland, citing the vehicles’ high maintenance costs and unreliability. The armoured vehicles, valued at millions of euros, were originally purchased by Ireland for its peacekeeping missions around 2010.
Sources close to the Irish Army stated that the RG-32M LTVs were taken out of service due to their inability to withstand the rigors of continuous use. The vehicles were reportedly plagued by technical issues, including engine failures, transmission problems, and erratic performance. As a result, they were rarely used in Irish peacekeeping operations.
Despite efforts to revamp and refurbish the vehicles, Ireland ultimately decided to store them in 2026, effectively taking them out of service. It was during this period that Ukraine, seeking to bolster its military capabilities after the Russian invasion, showed interest in acquiring the RG-32M LTVs.
However, after conducting a thorough assessment, Ukraine’s military commanders determined that the vehicles’ maintenance costs would be too high, outweighing any potential benefits. Additionally, concerns over the vehicles’ reliability and performance in hot and demanding climates may have played a role in their rejection.
“This was not a decision taken lightly,” said a senior Irish Defence Forces official, who wished to remain anonymous. “We assessed our capabilities and determined that the RG-32M LTVs were no longer suitable for our purposes. We understand that Ukraine has its own specific needs, and we respect their decision not to accept the donation.”
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence did not comment directly on the rejected donation, but a spokesperson confirmed that the country is prioritising the acquisition of more modern and combat-effective military equipment.
While the rejection of Ireland’s gift is a setback, it highlights the complexities of military logistics and the importance of carefully assessing the compatibility of donations and procurement decisions. As countries continue to navigate the challenges of global conflict and security threats, the need for effective and reliable military equipment remains paramount.
