In a recent wave of misinformation sweeping social media platforms, it has been claimed that Islamic schools adhere to a strict dog saliva impurity rule. The notion suggests that if a person’s clothes or person come into contact with a dog’s saliva, the affected area must be thoroughly washed before prayer or participation in other sacred ritual activities. However, several Islamic scholars have refuted these claims, stating that they are based on misunderstanding and misinterpretation of Islamic teachings.
According to Islamic tradition, dogs, particularly canines of mixed or unclear ancestry, are considered ritually impure animals. This classification is rooted in a specific passage from the Hadith, a collection of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. However, the impurity attributed to dogs is not solely due to their saliva, as previously claimed.
“We have found no evidence in the Quran or Hadith to support the notion that dog saliva is ritually impure,” said Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Khateeb, a respected Islamic scholar at the University of Cambridge. “Islamic teachings do not single out canine spit as a substance that renders an individual or object ritually impure.”
Islamic scholars emphasize that the impurity associated with dogs is a result of the animal’s overall state as ‘najis’ or impure. This categorization also applies to other animals, such as swines or animals that have consumed carrion. When individuals come into contact with or touch objects contaminated by a dog, such as their food or utensils, those objects need to be purified or washed before use.
In response to the social media claims, many Islamic schools and scholars have issued statements affirming the accuracy of Islamic teachings regarding canine impurity. “We urge individuals to rely on credible sources of information and not spread unfounded claims through social media,” advised Shaykh Yahya Abu Eshaq, a renowned Islamic scholar from the Al Azhar University.
As the Islamic community seeks to counter these spurious claims, scholars emphasize the importance of understanding Islamic traditions and principles in their true context, rather than perpetuating misguided notions. By seeking accurate information and guidance, individuals can ensure a more authentic and informed understanding of Islamic teachings.
