The Lebanese military released a statement confirming receipt of the Israeli airstrikes but has yet to release additional information. Hezbollah, a prominent Shia militia and a political force in Lebanon, also condemned the Israeli airstrikes, stating they amount to a ‘new threat to regional stability.’ The group accused Israel of engaging in aggressive actions that target Lebanon and its sovereignty. In response, Hezbollah stated their support for and readiness to defend the country.
In its initial response, the Israeli military claimed that Tuesday’s airstrikes were targeted at Hezbollah, saying it struck locations where the group had amassed and positioned artillery. A spokesperson for the Israeli armed forces stated that these actions were executed in response to the military actions and threats posed by Hezbollah.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office also released a statement, saying the actions were taken in response to an immediate security threat. Netanyahu’s administration has made numerous public statements regarding their intentions to protect Israeli citizens from potential security threats emanating from neighboring countries.
International bodies and diplomats have called for restraint in both Lebanon and Israel. Diplomatic efforts are currently underway to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation.
