ISRAEL DEFENDS GAZA BLOCKADE, DEPORTS FOREIGN ACTIVISTS

Tel Aviv, Israel – April 25, 2022. The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced today that all foreign activists aboard the “Free Gaza Flotilla” have been deported from Israel, as the government reaffirmed its stance on maintaining a lawful naval blockade on the Gaza Strip. The move comes amidst growing international criticism and protests against Israel’s blockade, which has been in place since 2007.

According to a statement released by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the deported activists, who were citizens of various countries including the United States, Turkey, and Canada, had entered Israeli waters without permission. The ministry asserted that Israel’s naval blockade, which restricts the delivery of goods to Gaza via sea, remains a necessary measure to prevent smuggling and the influx of illicit arms into the coastal enclave.

“The government of Israel will not permit any breach of the lawful naval blockade on Gaza,” the statement read. “This measure has been instrumental in preventing terrorism and preserving regional stability.”

The “Free Gaza Flotilla,” which set sail from international waters several days ago, was reportedly attempting to deliver tons of humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, and construction materials, to the impoverished Gaza Strip. However, Israeli naval vessels intercepted the flotilla and boarded the vessel, detaining its crew members.

The diplomatic fallout surrounding the incident has been swift, with Turkey – whose citizens were among those on board – condemning Israel’s actions as “barbaric and provocative.” The Turkish government accused Israel of “kidnapping” the activists and of “showing no respect for international law.”

Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, stated that Ankara would be taking “all necessary measures” to ensure the safe return of its citizens and to “put an end to Israel’s blockade on Gaza.” Ankara has traditionally been a vocal critic of Israel, particularly on issues related to Gaza.

International organizations, including the United Nations, have also called for an easing of restrictions on Gaza, which they describe as a “humanitarian emergency.” However, Israel insists that its blockade is a necessary security measure, aimed at preventing Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, from acquiring advanced military equipment.

The issue of the Gaza blockade has been a longstanding point of contention between Israel and its international community. The move to deport foreign activists on the flotilla may further exacerbate tensions, though Israel has stated its commitment to maintaining a lawful, albeit restrictive, naval blockade on Gaza.

In a statement, an official at the Israeli Foreign Ministry noted that, “Israel remains committed to upholding international law while ensuring the security of its citizens.”
