‘Israel Deploys Secret Forces to Somaliland Following Recognition of Breakaway Territory’

A senior Somali government official has revealed that Israel secretly deployed a small contingent of forces to Somaliland earlier this year, following the territory’s recognition by the Israeli government. The deployment, which took place in late February, marks an escalation of the country’s clandestine security operations in the region.

According to intelligence reports shared with Middle East Eye (MEE), the Israeli military chose soldiers of African heritage, particularly Ethiopians, to be part of the mission. This decision was made to avoid drawing attention to themselves and to blend in more seamlessly with the local community.

Somaliland, a self-declared state in East Africa, has been recognized by Israel in recent years. The recognition has led to increased cooperation between the two nations, with Israel providing military and economic support to Somaliland. In return, Somaliland has become a key partner in Israel’s regional security efforts.

The deployment of 50 Israeli soldiers to Somaliland in late February coincides with the resumption of the war on Iran and Israel’s increasingly aggressive posture in the Middle East. The move is seen by analysts as an attempt to expand Israel’s security influence in Africa and to counter Iran’s growing presence in the region.

The senior Somali government official, who spoke to MEE on condition of anonymity, revealed that the Israeli soldiers were deployed under a “covert” mission. The nature and objectives of the mission remain unclear, fueling speculation about Israel’s intentions in the region.

In a related development, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz admitted on June 17 to years of clandestine security operations with Somaliland. While Katz did not confirm the recent deployment of Israeli forces, his comments suggest a deeper level of security cooperation between the two nations than previously acknowledged.

The revelation of Israel’s secret forces in Somaliland raises concerns about the implications of Israel’s increasing presence in Africa. Analysts warn that the deployment could lead to increased tensions in the region and undermine regional stability.

Israel’s actions in Somaliland also highlight the complex dynamics of the region, with countries like Somaliland and Israel seeking to strengthen their security ties amidst growing tensions with rival nations like Iran.
