Israel Launches Airstrike on Southern Lebanon

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL / BEIRUT, LEBANON – Tensions in the Middle East escalated further yesterday as the Israeli military launched an airstrike on the town of Al Rihan, situated in southern Lebanon. Eyewitnesses and local officials confirmed that the precision strike, carried out in the early hours of the morning, inflicted significant damage on the town.

According to reports, at least two buildings were reduced to rubble, and multiple residents were injured in the bombardment. The strike is believed to have been in response to a spate of rocket attacks launched from Lebanese territory into Israeli-controlled territory in the preceding days. However, no casualties or significant damage were reported in Israel at the time of writing.

A spokesperson for the Israeli military released a statement asserting that the airstrike was a defensive action aimed at disrupting the capabilities of militant groups operating in southern Lebanon. The official emphasized that the operation will continue until the region is free from the threat of terrorist activity.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government condemned the Israeli action, describing it as a “violation of the country’s sovereignty” and a “breach of international law.” A statement from the Foreign Ministry in Beirut urged restraint and called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the escalating tensions in the region.

Residents of Al Rihan reported hearing the sound of explosions around 2 AM local time. “I was at home when I heard loud booms and saw the windows shattering,” a resident identified as Amira said. “It was a terrifying few minutes until the sounds stopped and the dust settled.”

An investigation into the incident is currently underway by a local committee comprising of government officials, security forces, and experts from relevant agencies. Preliminary findings suggest that the strike was precision-guided and aimed directly at a structure believed to be used by militant groups. Witnesses described the destruction as “catastrophic” and warned of potential long-term damage to the town’s infrastructure.

As diplomatic efforts continue in the region, concerns over further escalation are growing. Tensions have been heightened in the area in recent months, following a series of violent incidents along the Lebanese-Israeli border.

As the situation evolves, both sides are being closely watched by the international community. In a statement calling for restraint, a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said: “The United Nations urges both parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid any actions that could further escalate the situation, and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully.”
