JERUSALEM/LIBERATION- Israeli warplanes have conducted a series of airstrikes targeting several areas in southern Lebanon, according to sources. The raids were reported in the villages of Tefahta and Jibchit, approximately 80 kilometers south of the capital Beirut.
Details of the damage and casualty count were not immediately available. Local reports indicate, however, that there were significant explosions heard in the vicinity of the targeted locations. Witnesses also stated that rescue efforts have been launched in the areas affected by the airstrikes.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, with eyewitness accounts describing a series of low-flying jets and missile strikes in the region. The Lebanese military has confirmed the Israeli airstrikes, stating that its air defense systems were on high alert.
The airstrikes are the latest escalation in tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Shia militant group, in southern Lebanon. The region along the Lebanon-Israel border has long been a hotspot for clashes and violence, with periodic escalations in recent years.
No statement has been released on behalf of the Israeli military or government regarding the airstrikes, leaving international observers to speculate on the motives and implications of the targeted attacks.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati convened an emergency meeting with the country’s cabinet, urging calm and restraint during this sensitive time. “We will continue working on maintaining the safety and security of the Lebanese people,” he stated.
This development comes as Lebanon already faces a multitude of domestic issues, including severe economic hardship, a power vacuum following the resignation of former Prime Minister Hassan Diab, and lingering concerns over the country’s security along its borders.
International organizations and representatives are closely monitoring the situation and urging restraint to avoid any further escalation and prevent potential destabilization in the fragile region.
The international community will be closely watching developments in the Lebanon-Israel conflict as tensions continue to escalate.
