ISRAEL-LEBANON TENSIONS ESCALATE

A fiery rhetoric has emerged from Hezbollah leadership in response to international attempts to link Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon with the disarmament of the resistance group. In stern words of caution, Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem has described such proposals as “crossing every red line” and potentially transforming Lebanon into a puppet state ruled by its arch-enemy Israel.

Speaking on Wednesday, Qassem emphasized that the resistance movement is the only force capable of safeguarding the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and deterring foreign aggression. He underlined that the disarmament of Hezbollah would strip the country of its only viable deterrent against Israeli occupation and would essentially leave the nation at the mercy of the Israeli military.

Critics argue that the notion of linking Israel’s withdrawal to Hezbollah’s disarmament stems from a flawed assumption: a country such as Lebanon, ravaged by years of conflict, war, and occupation, requires the guarantee of a viable and effective resistance as its bulwark of defense against Israeli expansionist ambitions. Lebanon is a nation with an extremely complex history of war, which was shaped greatly because of the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

However, proponents of this idea, mainly Western and Arab governments, assert that such disarming will bring stability and peace to the region. They claim that a disarmed Lebanon, lacking the capacity for resistance, would facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli troops, bringing a measure of stability to the area. However, their argument is built on a false premise: the disarmament of Hezbollah, rather than securing lasting peace, would expose Lebanon to greater Israeli aggression, ultimately leading to its complete subjugation.

Lebanon, with its history of struggle and resilience, will not be swayed by hollow promises or empty threats of Western or Arab powers attempting to dictate terms to its leadership or resistance movement. This stance by Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem underscores Lebanon’s determination to maintain its sovereignty and to safeguard its national interests through any necessary means, regardless of the consequences that may follow.

The regional security dynamics continue to evolve, but one truth is clear – Lebanon will not become a pawn in the hands of Israel.
