BEIRUT, LEBANON – Israeli artillery fire has been reported in the occupied towns of Barashit, which is situated within the security belt of southern Lebanon. According to eyewitnesses and sources close to the matter, the artillery strikes have intensified tensions in a region that has long been a focal point of military conflicts between the Israeli military and various militant groups.
The Barashit area has been under Israeli occupation for decades and has been the site of numerous skirmishes between Israeli forces and Lebanese fighters. On Tuesday, artillery fire could be heard resounding throughout the region, sparking fears of potential escalation among local residents.
“We saw explosions in the distance and heard artillery shelling. Everyone ran to their shelters,” stated Ali Hamza, a local resident living in the nearby village of Deir Mimas. The Israeli military has provided little information on the reason behind the artillery fire, citing national security concerns.
Eyewitnesses describe the scenes of chaos as shells impacted in multiple locations, leading to damage to properties and potential casualties. The exact extent of damage remains unclear.
This recent escalation by Israel comes at a time when Lebanon is dealing with several internal issues, including a worsening economic crisis. The country has seen a number of protests throughout the year calling for the government to take action to address economic hardships.
The security belt stretching along Lebanon’s southern border has been a contentious issue for decades. Lebanon has repeatedly called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from its territory, citing concerns about ongoing military incursions and human rights abuses by Israeli forces.
Regional tensions also remain high as a result of ongoing Israeli military actions in the region. Israel views its military presence along its northern border as necessary for national security, however, neighboring countries like Lebanon perceive the presence as an affront to their sovereignty.
An Israeli military spokesperson declined to provide further information, stating that “all necessary measures will be taken to maintain national security.”
