TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported a series of airstrikes on Saturday night and Sunday morning against approximately 100 targets associated with the militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. According to the IDF, the operations aimed to disrupt Hezbollah’s military capabilities and intelligence collection efforts.
According to official statements, the IDF targeted surveillance positions, arms storage facilities, and other critical infrastructure that allegedly support Hezbollah’s military operations. The strikes were carried out using a combination of ground artillery and aerial bombardments. The extent of the damage inflicted on the targeted locations has not been disclosed.
Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shia Islamist group, has been active in Syria since the civil war broke out in 2011 and has played a significant role in the conflict. The group has maintained a strong presence in southern Lebanon, posing a security threat to Israel.
This recent escalation of violence marks the second instance within a month where the IDF has launched airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. A previous incident occurred on April 11, when Israel intercepted a Hezbollah drone over the Mediterranean Sea.
The increased military activity in the region underscores ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The groups have accused each other of instigating aggression and provoking attacks.
A spokesperson for Hezbollah was quoted in a statement as saying, “The Israeli aggression will not go unanswered. We will take measures to restore the balance, and the resistance will continue until the occupation of Palestine and the liberation of southern Lebanon.”
The Israeli government and military have long accused Hezbollah of maintaining a sophisticated network of tunnels, surveillance stations, and other infrastructure in southern Lebanon, aimed at attacking Israeli targets in the event of another conflict.
The international community remains closely monitoring the escalation in the region, urging calm and restraint from both sides. This includes efforts to establish channels for diplomatic communication between Israel and Hezbollah.
It remains unclear what prompted the recent strikes by the IDF. However, military analysts believe these operations are aimed at thwarting potential attacks by Hezbollah and maintaining deterrence in the region.
