Jerusalem, Israel (AP) – In a move deemed as a direct response to ongoing rocket attacks from Lebanon, the Israeli Air Force launched a series of precision-guided airstrikes targeting key infrastructure in the southern Lebanese town of Zarari early Tuesday morning.
According to eyewitness reports from the scene, the strikes, which were reportedly carried out by F-16 fighter jets, occurred approximately at 2:45 AM local time, with multiple explosions heard in the area. Initial assessments indicate that the primary target was a suspected missile facility within Zarari, although officials declined to provide further information regarding the exact nature of the targets struck.
“It appears our air force successfully targeted a high-priority terrorist infrastructure in response to the ongoing launch of rockets into Israel,” stated a senior Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) official on condition of anonymity. “We maintain that our actions are solely aimed at protecting our citizens and ensuring national security in light of continued aggression from neighboring countries.”
Tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border have intensified in recent weeks following a series of rocket attacks launched from Lebanon into Israeli territory. In response, the IDF has implemented a heightened alert status, bolstering troop and air defense assets in preparation for potential escalations.
Regional sources indicate that the recent uptick in cross-border tensions stems from a longstanding dispute over Lebanon’s Shebba Farms area, which both Israel and Lebanon claim as their own. Beirut maintains sovereignty over the disputed territory, with Israel continuing to occupy the area since the 1967 Six-Day War.
“This aggressive behavior by Israel is unacceptable and further destabilizes an already volatile region,” stated a high-ranking Lebanese government official in response to the IDF’s airstrikes. “We demand that Israeli forces cease their aggression and recognize our sovereignty over Shebba Farms.”
The situation continues to unfold as Israeli and Lebanese forces engage in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse. In the meantime, multiple international officials have expressed concerns regarding the escalating situation in the Middle East.
“We urge all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue in the pursuit of a peaceful resolution,” stated a spokesperson for the United States Department of State. “Our main priority remains regional stability and the protection of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.”
