BEIRUT – A series of airstrikes by the Israeli military targeted various areas in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, causing damage and casualties in several locations. The assault marked a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between Israel and Lebanon, with Beirut vowing to respond to the aggression.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the airstrikes, which were carried out by Israeli warplanes, began in the early hours of the morning and continued throughout the day. Lebanon’s Civil Defense reported multiple strikes in the border towns of Mansouri and Ainata, causing significant damage to residential areas and businesses.
“We have identified at least 10 casualties, with several more injured,” said an official from the Civil Defense, who wished to remain anonymous. “The situation is fluid, and we expect additional casualties.”
The Israeli military has not publicly commented on the airstrikes, but officials have suggested the assaults were carried out in response to “intelligence gathered on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon”. Hezbollah, a Shia Islamist movement and Lebanon’s largest political party, has a long history of involvement in conflicts with Israel.
The airstrikes come as tensions between Israel and Lebanon have continued to escalate in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Israel launched a series of drone attacks targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, prompting retaliation from the group. Lebanon has vowed to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, with the country’s government releasing a statement condemning the Israeli aggression.
“The Lebanese government strongly condemns the Israeli airstrikes on its territory,” the statement read. “We will take all necessary measures to defend our country and our people.”
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating situation, with a spokesperson for the United Nations urging calm and caution. “The UN urges all parties to exercise restraint and adhere to international law,” the spokesperson said.
The airstrikes have left many in Lebanon questioning the future of the country’s relationship with Israel. “The Israeli aggression has created a climate of fear,” said a resident of Ainata, who wished to remain anonymous. “We will not tolerate this kind of behavior from Israel.”
As tensions continue to escalate, Lebanon’s military is on high alert, with troops and equipment deployed along the border with Israel. The situation remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Lebanon will not back down in the face of Israeli aggression.
