Beirut, Lebanon – In a sudden escalation of violence, Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes early today targeting multiple areas in southern Lebanon, sending shockwaves throughout the region. The airstrikes, which reportedly began at approximately 02:00 local time, hit the villages of Kfarjouz, Nabatieh, Burj el-Shamali, and Arnoun.
Eyewitness reports from the affected areas describe a scene of widespread destruction, with buildings reduced to rubble and residents fleeing their homes in panic. Lebanon’s Hezbollah-backed Al-Manar television network reported that several homes and infrastructure were damaged in the airstrikes, though no official casualty figures have been confirmed.
The Israeli military has yet to comment on the airstrikes, but sources close to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) indicated that the strikes were a response to a reported attack by Hezbollah militants in the region. The IDF has long accused Hezbollah of maintaining a significant military presence in southern Lebanon, including the deployment of advanced rockets and artillery.
Lebanese security sources reported that the Israeli airstrikes targeted several Hezbollah sites and storage facilities, as well as residential areas where Hezbollah sympathizers live. The airstrikes are believed to have been conducted using Israeli F-16 and F-35 fighter jets.
The escalation of violence in the region comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, particularly between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. Israeli officials have long warned of an imminent threat posed by Hezbollah’s expanding arsenal and increasing aggression in the region.
The airstrike marks the first significant escalation of violence in Lebanon since 2006, when Israel launched a 34-day military campaign against Hezbollah in response to the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.
As the international community scrambles to respond to the crisis, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati is scheduled to convene an emergency meeting with senior security officials and diplomats to discuss the situation. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has also stated that it will maintain a high level of alert following the airstrikes.
The situation remains fluid, with residents in the affected areas advised to remain indoors until further notice. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
