Israeli Coalition Seeks to Dissolve Parliament Amid Growing Tensions with Haredi Parties

Tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community have reached a boiling point, prompting the coalition to consider dissolving the 25th Knesset. In a move aimed at maintaining control over the election date, coalition chairman Ofir Katz has submitted a bill to the parliament for dissolution, with the support of all faction heads.

According to reports, the spiritual leader of Degel Hatorah, a key Haredi party, declared that his faction no longer trusts Netanyahu and has joined forces with other Haredi groups to push for the dissolution of parliament. The main reason behind their discontent is the stalled military draft exemption law, a proposal that has been at the heart of contentious negotiations between the coalition and the opposition.

The proposed legislation has been a contentious issue, with the Haredi community strongly advocating for exemptions from mandatory military service on religious grounds. The stalemate has led Degel Hatorah and its ally, Agudath Yisrael, to threaten the coalition with parliament dissolution, a threat that appears to be on the verge of becoming a reality.

Katz’s bill, which has secured the backing of all coalition faction heads, is aimed at maintaining control over the election date. Possible dates for the new polls have been discussed, with some suggesting September 1st, 15th, or 20th, while others propose October 20th or 27th. The Shas party, a key member of the coalition, prefers earlier dates in September, while Likud and Religious Zionism favour holding the elections in October.

Interestingly, the opposition also appears to support an early election, a move that would further complicate Netanyahu’s position. With the Knesset dissolution on the table, the outcome of the election is expected to be deeply influenced by the contentious military draft exemption law.

As the coalition moves forward with the dissolution bill, it remains to be seen how the Haredi parties will react. However, one thing is certain: the fate of the 25th Knesset hangs in the balance, and the impact of this power struggle may be felt for weeks to come.
