Israeli Forces Accused of Using White Phosphorus in Southern Lebanon

BEIRUT, LEBANON – Reports have surfaced of Israeli forces targeting areas in southern Lebanon with white phosphorus, sparking widespread condemnation from international observers and local residents.

The alleged attacks occurred in the Ali al-Taher area, a region nestled along the borders with Israel, where tensions between the two nations have been escalating in recent weeks. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of chaos and devastation, with buildings and homes reduced to smoldering ruins.

Eyewitnesses claim that white phosphorus munitions were dropped from Israeli warplanes, emitting a distinctive yellow-orange smoke that can be seen for miles. The chemical compound, known for its highly flammable properties, can cause severe burns and potentially be hazardous to civilians.

Human rights groups and international organizations, including the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, have long been critical of the use of white phosphorus in conflict zones.

“This is a clear breach of international law and an affront to human dignity,” said a spokesperson for the Lebanese Red Cross. “We are deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the midst of this conflict.”

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported an increase in casualties and displaced persons in the region following the alleged attacks.

“It’s imperative that all parties respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians in conflict zones,” said a UN spokesperson.

Lebanese officials have denounced the alleged attacks, with Prime Minister Najib Mikati issuing a statement condemning Israel’s actions as a “clear escalation of the situation.”

The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have been engaged in a high alert status since the alleged attacks began, with troops positioned along the border in anticipation of potential escalations.

International diplomats have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to negotiation channels to address ongoing tensions between the two nations.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains volatile, with both Lebanese and Israeli forces remaining on high alert.
