Israeli Forces Allegedly Deploy White Phosphorus Against Southern Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon – Israeli forces have been accused of using white phosphorus against the Ali al-Taher Heights in southern Lebanon. Footage circulating on social media appears to confirm the allegations, drawing intense condemnation from Lebanese officials and international aid groups.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes against targets in the Ali al-Taher Heights, a region along Lebanon’s border with Israel. The strikes, which took place in the early hours of yesterday morning, reportedly resulted in significant property damage and injuries to local residents.

The alleged use of white phosphorus, a highly volatile and incendiary substance, has been widely criticized by human rights organizations and international governments. The chemical, often used in military contexts to clear areas of enemy personnel and equipment, can cause severe burns and other long-term health effects in exposed individuals.

“We strongly condemn the reported use of white phosphorus by Israeli forces against the Ali al-Taher Heights,” said a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. “The use of such a highly lethal and indiscriminate substance is unacceptable and contravenes international humanitarian law.”

Lebanese officials have also strongly denounced the alleged deployment of white phosphorus, with several high-ranking government officials calling for an immediate investigation into the incident.

“We urge the international community to take immediate action to prevent further attacks of this nature,” said a spokesperson for the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The people of Lebanon will not stand idly by while our sovereignty and territorial integrity are threatened by aggression and disregard for human life.”

The incident has also raised concerns about the protection of civilians in the region. Local aid groups are working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected by the airstrikes, including medical care and shelter for displaced individuals.

“The use of white phosphorus against civilians is a grave humanitarian concern that demands an immediate response from the international community,” said a spokesperson for the International Rescue Committee. “We urge all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians in the region and to adhere to international humanitarian law.”

The Israeli military has yet to issue a statement regarding the allegations, citing operational security concerns. However, a high-ranking government official told reporters that the use of white phosphorus is only permitted in certain, strictly regulated circumstances, and that the Israeli military would need to be in possession of highly sensitive information about enemy troop movements and positions to justify such a deployment.

As the situation in southern Lebanon continues to unfold, aid groups and human rights organizations are calling for greater accountability and action to prevent further attacks and protect the rights of civilians.
