Israeli military aircraft have been spotted conducting overflights in the eastern sector of southern Lebanon, local residents reported on Tuesday. According to eyewitnesses, Israeli fighter jets and reconnaissance planes flew low over the region, prompting heightened tensions in the area.
The sighting comes as a result of ongoing tensions between Israel and Lebanon, largely fueled by their conflicting interests in the disputed Shebaa Farms region. Israel maintains its control over the area, citing security concerns, while Lebanon disputes the annexation. Skirmishes and airstrikes have been recurring in the area in recent years.
The most recent aerial operation was observed in the vicinity of Kfar Kila, a small Lebanese village positioned near the Israeli separation fence. Residents of the village reported that the Israeli aircraft were flying low over the area, prompting fears of potential aggression. “The planes flew over our village very low, and we were worried they might attack,” a local resident stated. “But they just flew away after a few minutes.”
Lebanese security forces have increased their presence in the area, patrolling roads and streets in search of any signs of Israeli forces. The Lebanese military released a statement denouncing the Israeli actions, calling them a “violation of Lebanese sovereignty” and warning Israel to cease its incursions into the country’s airspace.
Israeli officials have yet to comment on the recent overflights. However, analysts point out that the operation may be a show of force aimed at reinforcing Israeli control over the disputed territory and deterring potential incursions by Lebanese forces.
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been ongoing for years, but a significant escalation of violence occurred in 2006 when Israel launched a military operation in southern Lebanon in response to an attack by Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Since then, small-scale skirmishes have become a frequent occurrence, with each side accusing the other of provocation.
In a separate incident, Israeli authorities arrested four Lebanese nationals on Monday, charging them with terrorism-related offenses. Beirut has called for the men’s immediate release, claiming they were arrested on false pretenses. The arrests have heightened fears that the current state of tensions may be leading to a larger conflict between the two nations.
The Lebanese government has called for restraint from both sides, urging calm and warning of potential destabilization in the region. However, the continued presence of Israeli military aircraft in the area has led to increased unease among local residents and international observers alike.
