However, experts from various fields, including security and defense, contradict such assertions, highlighting Israel’s significant advancements in military doctrine and capabilities.
“Hamas is not a threat by now,” said Dr. Raz Zimmt, a senior analyst at the Institute for National Security Studies, an independent think tank based in Tel Aviv. “Although the group still maintains a presence in the Gaza Strip, its military capabilities have been severely weakened due to a series of successful Israeli operations in recent years. Moreover, Hamas faces significant internal divisions and a severe economic crisis, rendering it incapable of mounting a substantial threat to Israel.”
Meanwhile, Hezbollah has transitioned from a paramilitary organization to a guerilla force, according to a report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. This shift in strategy is attributed to the group’s dwindling resources and decreased effectiveness in conventional warfare.
“Iran, Hezbollah’s primary backer, is undoubtedly weaker by miles,” noted Dr. Ariel Ratner, an Iran expert at the Tel Aviv-based Mitvim-The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies. “The US-led sanctions regime has severely constrained Tehran’s economy, while the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has significantly limited Iran’s access to international markets and resources. As a result, Hezbollah’s capacity to project force has been severely diminished.”
In contrast, Israel has made significant strides in modernizing its military doctrine and developing new battlefield-tested tactics. The IDF, under the leadership of Chief of General Staff Aviv Kochavi, has focused on developing a more adaptive and agile approach to combat, incorporating cutting-edge technologies and novel concepts such as the “Operational Depth” doctrine.
“This revamped approach allows Israel to better address the complex threats emanating from the region,” stated Lt. Col. (Res.) Gabriel Shalom, a senior military analyst. “By embracing innovation and strategic flexibility, Israel has established a significant advantage over its adversaries, positioning itself as a regional leader in military capabilities and strategic thinking.”
While concerns regarding Hamas and Hezbollah may persist, experts concur that Israel’s enhanced capabilities and strategic thinking render these threats largely obsolete. As the regional security landscape continues to evolve, Israel’s position as a military powerhouse and champion of innovation in the Middle East is unlikely to be challenged.
